Carbon dioxide USP is used for close-to-physiologic atmospheres for the operation of artificial organs, in cryosurgery with insufflators during laparoscopic surgery and as a component in a mixture of oxygen or air as a respiratory stimulant to promote deep breathing.

Heliox is the term used to describe mixtures of helium and oxygen. Mixtures containing helium USP are often used for the treatment of fixed partial upper obstruction or increased airway resistance, helping patients breathe easier. When combined with oxygen, helium reduces the density of the breathable mix. A 70/30 helium-oxygen mix is 2.3 times less dense than air and an 80/20 mixture is 3 times less.

Medical Air USP is used extensively in the ICU, PICU and NICU areas, and with pulmonary nebulizers to reduce the risk of excess oxygen in the lungs or other body tissue (hyperoxia) during mechanical ventilation or surgical procedures.

Nitrous oxide USP is used in the healthcare industry as an analgesic and adjunct to anesthesia.

Nitric oxide is used in the medical sector as a vasodilator to treat respiratory conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension in newborns. It helps improve oxygenation by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs and increasing blood flow, facilitating breathing in patients with severe respiratory difficulties.

Liquid oxygen is used in the medical sector for the treatment of patients with severe respiratory problems. It is employed in intensive care units and in oxygen therapy to improve respiratory capacity by supplying high-purity oxygen. It is essential for patients who require high levels of supplemental oxygen, such as those with chronic lung diseases or in medical emergencies.

A pure nitrogen atmosphere provides blanketing for heat treated parts and can be used to purge an existing furnace atmosphere. It can also be used as a carrier gas for carbon-controlled atmospheres.
